Well, the only person who could possibly get away with interrupting Yeezy on stage -- Jay-Z -- did just that at the BET Awards in Los Angeles over night.
The pair were on stage to collect the Video of the Year award for their 'Watch the Throne' collaboration 'Otis' (which incidentally beat out Jay-Z's wife Beyonce to the honour), when the joke went down.
Jay-Z started by apologising for arriving late and missing Kanye's performance due to LA traffic, then thanked the BET for the award. He then handed the spotlight to Kanye, who started with: "I wanna thank BET for..." before Jay-Z interjected with "Excuse me, Kanye, I'mma let you continue," ripping Kanye's controversial Taylor Swift interruption.Amidst raucous applause and laughter from the audience Kanye quipped "I was tryin' to defend your girl, man."
Touché good sir. After all, his 2009 Swift interruption was because Kanye thought Beyonce was robbed of the award that night when Taylor won instead of Jay-Z's wife. And of course, Kanye's heart was in the right place, right? Right?
Other highlights of the night included a moving tribute to singer Whitney Houston, who passed away in February this year just before the Grammy Awards. Led by Mariah Carey, the tribute line-up featured Whitney's mother Cissy singing 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' as well as Whitney's proteges Brandi and Monica. D'Angelo also featured in his first televised performance in 12 years, performing his hit song 'How Does It Feel' as well as a new song from his new album, due out later this year. Two other surprising performances came from Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown. Nicki, who went OTT with her exorcist-themed Grammy performance, kept it relatively low key while performing 'Champion' and 'Beez in the Trap' with rapper 2 Chainz. Brown, who usually mimes his award show performances due to his high-energy dance routines, actually sang his two songs live, covered in ghoul-like body paint.
